After completing high school in Gwinn, Michigan, she attended the University of Northern Michigan, later completing her undergraduate degree in English and history at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She later earned a master’s degree in Developmental Learning and Psychometry (diagnostic testing) at UAH. Graduate certification in Gifted Education was earned at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In 1997 she was one of the first ten teachers in Alabama to become certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Mrs. Harris has served in public schools in Alabama and Tennessee for 39 years. Her family attends Whitesburg Baptist Church where she served as homeschool coordinator for 16 years.
